About Freshners

What is Freshners?

Freshners is a three-generation family brand from Gowalia Tank, Mumbai. We make handmade mukhwas, the traditional Indian after-meal mouth freshener, along with masalas, premixes and dried berries. The name is spelled Freshners (without the middle “e”).

Do you make air fresheners or room fresheners?

No. Freshners is a food brand. We only make edible mouth fresheners (mukhwas), masalas, premixes and dried berries. If you were looking for air or car fresheners, you've found a mukhwas shop instead, but you're welcome to stay for a spoonful.

Who makes Freshners mukhwas?

Our family. Freshners was started by a mother, joined by a grandmother, and is now carried forward by the third generation. Every batch is still roasted, mixed and packed by hand in Mumbai.

Are your products Jain-friendly?

Yes, our products are made to suit Jain lifestyles. If you have a specific requirement, message us and we'll tell you exactly what goes into each blend.

About mukhwas

What is mukhwas?

Mukhwas (also spelled mukhwaas) is a traditional Indian mouth freshener eaten after meals. It's usually a mix of roasted seeds like saunf (fennel), dhana dal (split coriander seeds) and til (sesame), sometimes with supari, rose petals, coconut or dry fruit.

Is mukhwas the same as a mouth freshener?

Yes. Mukhwas is India's traditional mouth freshener. Unlike mints or sprays, it's made from real seeds, spices and dried fruit, and is enjoyed as a small after-meal treat.

When should I eat mukhwas?

Traditionally a small spoonful after lunch or dinner, but plenty of people enjoy it anytime they want something fresh and crunchy.

What's the difference between mukhwas and plain saunf?

Plain saunf is just fennel seeds. Mukhwas is a blend: saunf is often the base, mixed with other roasted seeds, flavourings and sometimes sweet elements like gulkand, rose petals or dry fruit.
